Psychological Services
If you are already getting help with home living, work, or leisure activities with our agency you have
access to an agency psychologist at no cost. Available services include consultation, assessment,
counseling, and education. Individuals or agency supervisors can ask for the involvement of an agency
psychologist at any time. Consent is needed before a psychologist can get involved. Descriptions of our
services are listed below.
-
Consultation - This is a problem solving process. It involves the process of
figuring out the problem and using psychological ideas to help solve the problem. At this agency a
psychologist will provide help to write a support plan. The plan will help our staff work with you in a
way that meets your needs. When you need help with behaviour the psychologist will look at whether the
plan is working for you.
-
Assessment – A psychologist will gather information about a problem by talking to you. Talking to others
who know you, and sometimes watching what you do in places where you are having a problem. A psychologist
might also use a standard list of questions to gather information. Assessment may also include the use of
intelligence and achievement tests.
-
Counseling – Counseling involves the use of psychological knowledge, skills and judgment in helping
people solve problems, make decisions and cope with life stress. If you are feeling emotional distress
or want to deal with problems you are facing you may talk with an agency psychologist.
-
Education – Agency Psychologists will provide information about life skills, mental health and positive
supports for a variety of behaviours, to individuals and groups.
If you get services from another Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) funded agency in Calgary you may have limited access to our psychological services.
